How to Troubleshoot a “Website Not Loading” Issue

When a website doesn’t load, it can feel urgent and overwhelming. The good news is that most website loading issues are temporary, local, or easy to fix once you know where to look. This guide walks you through calm, practical checks, starting with the simplest fixes first.

This guide will help you quickly identify why your website isn’t loading and show you what to do next, without needing technical knowledge.

Website not loading?

1: Check If the Issue Is Just You (Fastest Relief)

TIP: This step alone resolves a large number of “website down” scares.

Try This First

  • Open other websites (GoogleYouTube, news sites)
  • Try loading your website on:
    • A different device
    • A different browser
    • Mobile data instead of Wi-Fi

If your site loads elsewhere, the issue is likely local (browser, device, or connection).

2: Refresh and Restart (Yes, It Really Helps)

Quick Fix:

  • Refresh the page
  • Restart your browser
  • Restart your router or modem

Temporary network glitches are more common than people realise.

3: Use a Website Status Checker

Use a site-status tool to confirm whether the website is down for everyone or just you.

If the site is up for others, the issue is likely local. If it’s down globally, it may be server or DNS-related

TIP: This removes guesswork and panic.

4: Check for Browser Issues

Clear Browser Cache

Old or corrupted data can prevent pages from loading.

TIP: Clearing the cache forces your browser to fetch a fresh version of the website.

Try Incognito / Private Mode

This disables browser extensions that may be blocking content.

Quick Win: If the site loads in incognito mode, a browser extension is likely the cause.

5: Look for Error Messages

Error messages are clues, not failures.

Common examples:

Make a note of the exact message, as it helps narrow down the cause quickly.

6: Flush Your DNS Cache (Safe and Reversible)

Your computer may be using outdated DNS information, so flushing your DNS cache helps clean your cache.

How to Flush DNS

  • Windows:
ipconfig /flushdns
  • macOS:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

This refreshes how your device finds your website online.

7: Try a Different DNS Server (Optional)

If DNS issues persist, switching to a public DNS can help:

This can resolve ISP-related DNS delays.

If You Own the Website – Check DNS Records

Incorrect DNS is one of the most common causes of a website not loading.

Confirm that:

  • Your domain points to the correct server IP
  • Recent changes (hosting moves, domain transfers) have fully propagated

DNS changes can take up to 24 hours to fully apply worldwide.

9: Check Hosting and Server Status

If DNS is correct, the issue may be server-side:

  • Check for maintenance or outages via our Network Status Page
  • Review hosting notifications or dashboards

If the server is offline, the website won’t load, regardless of device or browser.

10: Review Recent Changes

Ask yourself:

Reverting recent changes often restores the site immediately.

11: Restore a Backup (Last Resort)

If you have a recent backuprestoring it can be the fastest way to get back online.

TIP: Regular backups turn emergencies into minor setbacks.
