Understanding Domain Extensions with Special Registration Requirements

Choosing a domain name is exciting, but some domain extensions come with special registration requirements that can feel confusing if you’re not expecting them.

These requirements aren’t there to block you. They exist to protect trust, security, and the intended purpose of certain domain spaces.

Understanding this upfront helps you register the right domain faster, avoid delays, and make confident decisions.

This guide will help you understand why some domain extensions have restrictions, learn the three main types of restricted domain extensions, know what to expect before you register, avoid common delays or failed registrations, and feel confident choosing a domain that fits your needs.

Understanding Domain Extensions with Special Registration Requirements

What Are Domain Extensions with Special Requirements?

Some Top-Level Domains (TLDs) are governed by registries that apply extra rules around who can register them and how they’re used

These rules help ensure:

  • Authentic representation (e.g. government, education, NGOs)
  • Regional or national integrity
  • Professional credibility
  • Improved security and trust online

At a high level, these TLDs fall into three categories

1. Sponsored and Highly Restricted TLDs (sTLDs / gTLDs)

Sponsored TLDs are managed by official organisations and are only available to eligible entities. Registration requires proof before approval.

Common Characteristics

  • Strict eligibility checks
  • Manual verification
  • Not available to the general public
  • Designed to protect institutional trust

Examples

TLD Who Can Register
.gov United States government entities
.archi Qualified, licensed architects and organisations recognised by the International Union of Architects (UIA
.edu Accredited post-secondary educational institutions
.mil United States military
.aero Members of the air transport industry
.coop Verified cooperative associations
.jobs Organisations focused on HR or employment
.museum Accredited museums
.int International treaty-based organisations

IMPORTANT: If you’re not part of the eligible group, these domains won’t be approved even if payment is made.

2. Country Code TLDs (ccTLDs) with Local Presence Requirements

Country-code TLDs represent specific countries or regions. Some require a local connection to ensure domains are used appropriately.

Common Requirements

  • Citizenship or residency
  • Registered business presence
  • Local administrative contact

Examples

TLD Requirement
.ca Canadian citizen, resident, or organisation
.au Australian citizen, permanent resident, registered company, or entity to hold a license
.de Local administrative contact in Germany
.fr Individual or business based in the EU
.ie Irish resident, citizen, or company trading in Ireland
.eu EU residency or registered organisation
.it EU-based individuals or businesses
.us US citizen, resident, or eligible organisation
.br Brazilian ID or business registration
.ch Swiss local presence
.sg Registry-specific local presence rules
.es Registry-specific local presence rules

IMPORTANT: These requirements help maintain national trust and prevent misuse.

3. Restricted or Purpose-Based Generic TLDs (gTLDs)

Some generic extensions are intended for specific purposes or industries. While more flexible than sTLDs, they may still require validation or technical compliance.

Common Examples

TLD Special Requirement
.pro Verified professional credentials
.ngo / .ong Verified non-profit status
.biz Intended for business use
.name Intended for personal use
.app / .dev HTTPS & active SSL required

IMPORTANT: These rules exist to protect users and improve security across the web.

Other Registry-Specific Considerations

Technical and Policy-Based Rules

  • Minimum character lengths (some TLDs require 3+ characters)
  • Naming restrictions (reserved words or patterns)
  • Security requirements (mandatory SSL for some TLDs)
  • Verification timelines (manual approvals can take longer)

Special Note on .ai

Although widely used by tech companies, .ai is technically a country-code TLD (Anguilla) and remains subject to registry policies.
