Transmit web content, background code scripts, and file packages from your desktop to your live server using CuteFTP.
Whether you’re publishing a new website, updating existing content, or downloading files to edit or back up, CuteFTP provides a simple way to manage your website files securely. This guide will help you upload and download website files using CuteFTP with your 1-grid hosting account. By the end of this guide, you’ll be able to confidently transfer files between your computer and your hosting server without needing technical assistance.

Before You Begin
Before initiating your first asset sync, make sure you meet the following baseline requirements:
- The CuteFTP client software is running on your machine.
- You have already mapped your profile details within the app via How to Configure CuteFTP for Your 1-grid Hosting Account.
- You are successfully connected to your live 1-grid hosting account server space.
- The local files or folders you want to upload or download are ready on your computer.
💡 Context: CuteFTP is an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client that allows you to securely transfer files between your local computer and your website hosting account. Its drag-and-drop interface makes moving large batches of files or complete website directories highly reliable compared to standard web browsers.
Follow These Steps
1. Connect to Your Website
Open CuteFTP on your computer and launch your previously saved website profile from the Site Manager panel. Once authorised, verify that the twin-pane dashboard view is active:
- Local Pane: Displays files and directories stored locally on your computer.
- Remote Pane: Displays folders and system structures hosted on your remote server space.
2. Locate Your Local Files
Inside your Local Pane, browse to the local folder directory that holds your fresh website design files.
- To select multiple scattered files: Hold down the Ctrl key while clicking individual items.
- To select a block of files: Click the first file, hold down the Shift key, and click the last file.
3. Upload Your Files
Once your local items are highlighted, click the Upload icon button on the toolbar menu layout (or drag them smoothly from the local panel into your remote directory panel). CuteFTP will open its connection pipeline and begin processing data transmissions. Keep the application running until the active data log indicators clear completely.
4. Verify the Upload
Once the upload finishes, review your Remote Pane view list to verify your items display accurately inside the correct website directory (typically public_html). Open a separate browser tab, enter your live site domain URL, and hit refresh to confirm that your updated layout features render cleanly. Clear your cache if updates do not appear immediately.
5. Locate the File on the Remote Server
If you are pulling down a data pack, backup script, or file archive from the web host to your machine, move your cursor over to the Remote Pane. Navigate through the remote folder hierarchy to locate your target file or folder container.
6. Download the File
Highlight your target server assets, and click the Download icon button on the toolbar. CuteFTP will copy the selected file from your hosting account directly into the destination folder running in your active local window panel. Verify that the file appears successfully in your selected local folder.
7. Disconnect Safely
When your file movement queues read completely clear, click the Disconnect broken socket link icon button on the top status strip to gracefully exit your network session loop.
What Happens Next?
Once file sync queues execute, data parameters take effect instantly across the infrastructure.
- Direct Server Deployment: Uploaded code modifications or fresh index updates overwrite previous variables immediately, modifying your public web presence on the fly.
- The public_html Rule: Ensure your core public landing assets are delivered inside your
public_htmldirectory root folder. Dropping files outside of this specific structural container will block web browsers from looking up your content.
Important Things to Know
- The Overwrite Rule: Transmitting an asset file containing an identical layout name to an item already present in the target remote folder directory will trigger an automatic system overwrite, permanently replacing the original version.
- DNS Propagation Latency: If your website was recently launched or moved to 1-grid, regional internet service provider DNS propagation loops may delay when uploaded changes become visible.
- Transmission Queue Safety: Interrupting active sync actions by closing the software layout window or disconnecting mid-stream can cause broken data loops or leave files incomplete and corrupted.
- Secure Protocol Layering: Standard FTP sends data across paths without encryption. We highly recommend utilising encrypted variants like FTPS or SFTP inside your connection properties to protect your data and master credentials during transmission.
- Local Browser Caching: Browsers frequently store persistent image snapshots locally. If your updates fail to manifest after a successful upload log, clear your browser history or perform a hard refresh.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Uploading your main website files to the wrong folder on the hosting server instead of the mandatory
public_htmldirectory. - Terminating your active internet network stream or closing CuteFTP before file queues completely finish writing data blocks.
- Overwriting central system layout scripts or theme files without storing a local copy backup folder first.
- Selecting an unexpected local destination folder path on your computer when downloading files from your server.
- Assuming website updates failed before performing a hard refresh or clearing your local browser cache history.
If This Didn’t Work
If asset movements stall or trigger systemic transmission error notifications inside the data console box, verify that your FTP connection remains stable and active. Confirm your login credentials, verify that your user account holds full write permissions for the destination folder, and retry the transfer after reconnecting. Check your internet connection for temporary ISP routing interruptions.
You’re Ready!
Your data deployment routine via CuteFTP is completely mastered. Most file transfer issues are caused by uploading files to the wrong folder, interrupted transfers, or browser caching – not by problems with your hosting account. Taking a few moments to verify your transfers ensures smooth site maintenance.
