This position is based in Cape Town and is worked from our office. It is not a remote or hybrid role, so you'll need to be able to travel in every working day.

Job Purpose
The Junior Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day monitoring, maintenance, deployment and troubleshooting of 1-grid's server, network and infrastructure environment. This is a hands-on technical role requiring a broad understanding of infrastructure technologies, operating systems, networking and data-centre environments. The successful candidate will work closely with senior engineers and other technical teams to maintain reliable, secure and high-performing infrastructure and hosting services.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure Monitoring & Maintenance
- Monitor servers, network equipment and infrastructure systems.
- Perform routine maintenance on servers, network equipment and related infrastructure.
- Identify and escalate infrastructure issues before they impact customers or business operations.
- Perform software installations, updates, upgrades and security patching.
- Conduct hardware maintenance and replacement activities.
- Perform hardware diagnostics and troubleshoot faulty equipment.
- Assist with maintaining high availability and reliability of hosting infrastructure.
Server & Systems Administration
- Assist with the administration of Linux and Microsoft-based systems.
- Perform system configuration and routine administration tasks.
- Assist with server provisioning, configuration and deployment.
- Monitor system performance, resource utilisation and capacity.
- Assist with backups, restores and infrastructure recovery activities.
- Support virtualisation environments where required.
Network Support
- Troubleshoot network connectivity and performance issues.
- Assist with configuration and maintenance of switches, firewalls and other network equipment.
- Troubleshoot DNS and other core networking services.
- Assist with network infrastructure deployments and modifications.
- Maintain copper and fibre connectivity and cabling where required.
Infrastructure Deployment
- Deploy and configure new servers, networking equipment and infrastructure.
- Assist senior engineers with the design and modification of infrastructure.
- Assist with migrations, upgrades and infrastructure changes.
- Ensure installations and configurations comply with established technical standards.
Security
- Apply operating-system and infrastructure security patches.
- Assist with firewall and network-security configuration.
- Identify and report potential infrastructure security risks.
- Follow established security procedures and access controls.
Documentation & Knowledge Management
- Maintain accurate infrastructure and equipment records.
- Maintain technical documentation, diagrams and configuration information.
- Develop and update standard operating procedures and knowledge-base articles.
- Ensure infrastructure changes are appropriately documented.
Hardware & Asset Management
- Maintain accurate records of servers, network equipment and other infrastructure assets.
- Assist with hardware procurement recommendations.
- Assist with hardware installation, upgrades, replacement and decommissioning.
- Monitor equipment condition and report hardware requiring replacement.
Support & Incident Response
- Provide technical support to internal staff and customers when required.
- Respond to server, network and infrastructure incidents.
- Participate in emergency infrastructure support.
- Participate in after-hours and out-of-business-hours maintenance when required.
- Escalate complex or high-impact incidents to senior engineers or management.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- Diploma, degree or relevant technical qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science, Networking or a related field is advantageous.
- CompTIA A+, Network+ or equivalent certification is advantageous.
Experience & Technical Knowledge
- Practical understanding of Microsoft and Linux operating systems.
- Good understanding of TCP/IP networking and DNS.
- Understanding of servers and data-centre environments.
- Basic experience with network switches and networking equipment.
- Understanding of hardware components and diagnostics.
- Basic firewall and network-security knowledge.
- Understanding of copper and fibre connectivity.
- Virtualisation experience is advantageous.
- Acronis Backup experience is advantageous.
- Previous experience in a hosting or technical infrastructure environment is advantageous.
